(Unit 2) Stone Cold, Steve Pyke, Jennette Mcurdy Analysis

Robert Swindells

Stone cold is a novel written by Robert Swindells in 1993, this novel represents the experience of being homeless. The storyline of this novel has an exiting and griping punch to it. The narrative switches between Link, a newly homeless seventeen-year-old who is getting to grips with his new environment, and Shelter, an ex-army officer (who recruits homeless people) scorned after being dismissed from his job. Because he lost his job, Shelter gets rid of homeless people on the streets of London by taking them to his home and killing them. This novel is a Young adult/horror. This novel is powerful and inspiring. This novel is atmospheric,  the descriptions are very detailed contributing to the sheer atmosphere of the story.

Robert Swindle had the inspiration of this story from real life homeless people. He looked at how they dress and what they do and he put this research into his story.

Steve Pyke

Steve Pkye is an artist who produces photos. The photos are photos of homeless people in London. This collection shows a wide range of photos with homeless people at there norm.  here is one of his best photographs:
The photo above is a photo of
a homeless person just at normality
this man in the picture looks like you or I,
no dirt or scuffed up cloths, this shows that these
homeless people are just normal people with less money.

Jennette McCurdy

Jennette Mcurdy composed a song about the homeless the song is called Homeless Heart. This song was to make people feel sympathy for the homeless. A song is sometimes a better way of getting the message across to people about a certain subject and this song worked with the lyrics used.

Here are the lyrics:
Lonesome stranger
With a crowd around you      They watch you !!

I see who you are

You joke, they laugh
Til the show is over
Then you fall so hard

If you're needing
A soul-to-soul connection     They need to talk !!

I'll run to your side

When you're lost in the dark
When you're out in the cold
When you're looking for something that resembles your soul      Repetition used !!
When the wind blows your house of cards

I'll be a home to your homeless heart

Open close me
Leave your secrets with me
I can ease your pain

And my arms will be
Just like walls around you
Come in from the rain

If you're running
In the wrong direction
I will lead you back

When you're lost in the dark
When you're out in the cold
When you're looking for something that resembles your soul        Repetition used !!
When the wind blows your house of cards

I'll be a home to your homeless heart

Broken
Shattered like a mirror
In a million pieces
Sooner or later
You've got to find
Something someone
To find you and save you

When you're lost in the dark
When you're out in the cold
When you're looking for something that resembles your soul      Repetition used !!
When the wind blows your house of cards

When you're looking for something that resembles your soul   Repetition used !!
When the wind blows your house of cards

I'll be a home to your homeless heart
I'll be a home to your homeless heart

Margate History !!

Margate was recorded as "Meregate" in 1264 and as "Margate" in 1299, but the spelling continued to vary into modern times. The name is thought to refer to a pool gate or gap in a cliff where pools of water are found, often allowing swimmers to jump in. The cliffs of the Isle of Thanet are composed of chalk, a fossil-bearing rock.
The town's history is tied closely to the sea and it has a proud maritime tradition. Margate was a "limb" of Dover in the ancient confederation of the Cinque ports. It was added to the confederation in the 15th century. Margate has been a leading seaside resort for at least 250 years. Like its neighbour Ramsgate, it has been a traditional holiday destination for Londoners drawn to its sandy beaches. Margate had aVictorian pier which was destroyed by a violent storm in 1978.
Like Brighton and Southend, Margate was infamous for gang violence between mods and rockers in the 1960s, and mods and skinheads in the 1980s.
The Thanet Offshore Wind Project was under construction in 2009 and the site is now visible from the seafront.

How the arts regenerated Margate (untitled)

Here is just the summery of the story:

The Universe, Earth, Europe, UK, England, Kent, Thanet, Margate, the place were this story happens. A young child wonders what Margate used to look like and what kind of place it was, to be honest it was a bright happy and a cheerful place but over the years it became less and less and less of those things. A grandma shows her grandson all of her photos of Margate . Her past was eventful and the grandson begins to feel like he hasn't lived in those great times he is to young to experience what his grandmother had when she was young. He had to face it Margate was a different place now. He was intrigued by this topic and began to tell his classmates what a great place margate was they just stick there tongues out and make fun of him. They just make him feel bad cause they believe that margate is a dump and is very deprived compared to a lot of other towns in the UK so he really wants to get the point across that margate IS a good place and that we can make it better. So for his presentation in which he has to do in class he chooses Margate History and begins to tell his fellow classmates what a wonderful place Margate is becoming. His classmates are reassured by him and they also believe it is a better place. He explains many places such as the Tuner Contemporary and the Theatre Royal as being the heart of margate, the arts. The point of this story is to get the point across that Margate is still a good place and that the arts are regenerating Margate for the best.

We went to the new building site of the turner contemporary to the droit house we saw Kelko who told us all about the turner contemporary. We had this all on camera. We then went to a fast food chain and after that we walked over to the Community gallery where we meet some of the local people with disabilities, they where colouring in pictures and we walked around and saw all of the art work produced by the local people. After that we then went to the Theatre Royal and went on a small tour around the historic theatre. We then had a small talk with the people who work at the theatre, the theatre artistic director Will Wollen wasn't available so we did not speak with him so we spoke to another member of the theatre . We then went back to the school after a long day in margate.

Tracy Emin - I Never Stopped Loving You (Unit 2)

I NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU

Above: Tracy Emins, I have never stopped loving you

Tracy Emins, I Never stopped loving you is placed in Margate, it is positioned on top of the building outside the new Turner Contemporary . The building is named Droite house on the Margate Peir. Tracy Emin was   raised in the town of Margate , Her ealry works bought her to fame such as Everyone I have ever slept with 1963 - 1995 and My Bed. These two peices of art are some of her most famous pecies.

Droite House:

The building of Margate Harbour itself was carried out in 1810 by John Rennie. Up until this time, the whole of the coastal area from Margate almost to Broadstairs, was a perfect haven for smugglers due to the numerous rocky bays that exist on the Thanet coast. Indeed, smuggling was a common way for local men to support themselves and their families. The building of the harbour enabled trade to expand using, instead of the traditional sailing hoys, the faster cutters and steamships. Coastguards were stationed along the coast and as a consequence marked the beginning of the end for the smuggling trade.
Although much of the seafront buildings are shabby and in need of renovation they still retain a certain charm. Along the Promenade at this end of the town there are still many enchanting, typical, Victorian seaside resort buildings to admire. Take note of the 34 streetlight columns along the seafront with their decoration, variously described as sturgeons or dolphins, at the base. From the harbour, across the road on The Parade, you can see Royal York Mansions. Dating from the late 19th century it is a purpose built mansion block of flats with splendid wrought iron balconies that look out over the harbour and the beach. On the side of this building is a blue plaque commemorating the fact that Prince Frederick, (of Grand Old Duke of York fame) had lived in a house on this spot in the 18th century. And it now contains Tracy Emins, I  never stopped loving you.

Tracy Emin:

Tracey Emin (born 1963) is an English artist, one of the so-called Young British Artists (YBAs). She is probably only second to Damien Hirst among the YBAs in terms of notoriety among the general public. In particular, her piece My Bed, part of 1999's Turner Prize exhibition, and consisted of her own unmade bed complete with used condoms and blood-stained underwear, brought her a great deal of attention from the press.  Emin was born in London, but brought up in Margate. She has a twin brother Paul. Emin's father was married to a woman other than her mother and while still young he abandoned the family which lead to a decline in their standard of living, an event which has featured in a number of works. Around the age of 14 she was raped. She initially studied art in Maidstone which she has described as one of the best experiences of her life where she was greatly influenced by Billy Chidish, then returned to London to study at the Royal College of Art, where she obtianed an MA in painting. She was initially influenced by Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele, though later destroyed all her paintings from this early period. Later still, she studied philosophy at Birkbeck.

I Never Stopped Loving you, will never be forgotten !!!

Phil Collins - Another day in Paradise (Unit 2)

Phil Collin's, Antother day in paradise is a very powerful song it shows the homeless. The video show Phil also performing and playing the piano as well as the images of the deprived homeless. These images in which are used are real and very disturbing this adds to the theme of the song and video. The video also shows close-up shots of Phils face it wants you to focus on his face to experience the same emotion as he is feeling. There lots of close-up shots throughout the video including the faces of the deprived this show the emotion in which they are feeling. The main purpose of this production is to make the audience feel emotional.Phil is trying to tell us that there are still homless people around and we should still take notice of them. The lyrics of the song are trying to tell a story of the homeless with him also taking to them in the song e.g. "Oh, Think twice its just another day for you in paradise".

The Life Of Margate (Margate Presentation)

For my margate presentation i have decided to write a story following the life of a family who have been in margate for generations and have been influenced by the ups and downs of Margate. A kid wants to know about margate so he asks his grandma, she looks through her photos and she shows her grandchild her time as a child in Margate. This includes her at the theatre royal and at dreamland amusement park. The child is intrigued and tells his class mates. He then tells the teacher and they end up doing Margate history as a project. This story will include photos relevant to the certain moments in the story. He then goes back to his family and asks numerous questions until it becomes the families concern that margate has become derelict and unpopular so they then realize Margate is becoming a better place this will also include the Turner Contemporary . The idea of this story is to make people think about the arts regeneration of margate. This will be in the format of a book and will be typed up on a word document.
